Charteris builds towards IIP accreditation with InfoBasis technology

Leading business technology consultants extend career planning in line with major UK personnel initiative

Business technology consultants Charteris are working with capability expert InfoBasis on a drive towards Investors in People accreditation. As part of a company initiative to consolidate and improve HR practices, the consultancy has adopted the InfoBasis Enterprise Skills Managerâ„¢ (ESM) platform.

“With a flat organizational structure, three UK offices, and the vast majority of our 140 consultants working remotely, it is vital to ensure clear career progression for all,” said Charteris Head of Human Resources Barry Hoffman. “Also, learning and development need to be linked directly to business strategy, and reflected in our corporate balanced score card. InfoBasis ESM allows us to do exactly that.”

The web-based platform allows staff to assess their skills against both Charteris’s own behavioural framework and the IT professional standard skills framework SFIA (the Skills Framework for the Information Age). Both the frameworks are linked to training interventions and to corporate planning. The result is that individuals now have a single personal development plan, while the organisation has a capability plan coupled to corporate strategy.

“Gaining Investors in People (IIP) accreditation will demonstrate the quality of our staff development and tracking systems,” observed Barry, “but it’s not just about the badge. For the first time, we are able to see all our corporate training plans consolidated in one place, view our skills gaps at any level from corporate down to individual, and it’s clear where we need to enhance skills to meet our strategic goals. And we have also experienced extra benefits of working with InfoBasis ESM.”

One of these benefits has been the ability for Charteris to manage its organisational capability. “Now we can see where our skills lie throughout the company, and for a consultancy that’s crucial. We need to assign the right people to each assignment for maximum client satisfaction,” said Barry.

Barry sees this consolidated, corporate-wide view of skills as a new stage for Charteris. “The approach is already contributing to increased staff retention,” he says, “and as we grow, we are extending the approach to recruitment to ensure candidates have the exact skills we need. We’re beginning to build a pool of talent that will take our business to the next level.”

“For highly professional organisations such as Charteris, building and maintaining consultants’ expertise is essential,” adds InfoBasis CEO Ashley Wheaton. “Individuals and the employing organisation both gain when there are clear career paths, investment in personnel development and clear methods for project assignment.”
