New solution encourages professionalism in IT spot

In response to the growing demand by employers for more relevant and business specific skills from their IT workforce, the British Computer Society (BCS) has launched IT Job Describer. This new professional solution has been developed to enable employers to enhance and raise standards within their IT teams.

IT Job Describer, a browser based solution, developed in conjunction with BCS partner InfoBasis, is designed to help businesses create IT job descriptions, identify skills, training and experience against the recognized benchmark of the SFIAplus* IT skills training and development standard. BCS believes the tool will give employers the building blocks for developing professionalism within their IT departments. Deployed via an online hosted system with full consultancy and technical support available, IT Job Describer is simple to use, producing detailed job descriptions in minutes. Users can create job descriptions covering a wide range of IT sectors and levels, from entry to senior personnel and each job description can be customised to suit individual business requirements. BCS head of professional development Malcolm Sillars explains: "For any professional, working to industry standards and employing best practice are key elements in the smooth and efficient running of business; by using IT Job Describer businesses demonstrate their commitment to professionalism in IT." "This is a milestone in InfoBasis' long-standing relationship with the BCS," commented InfoBasis CEO Ashley Wheaton. "IT Job Describer will benefit both individuals and organisations by showing clearly what skills IT jobs require, and encouraging smarter deployment of professional staff." Notes: *SFIAplus is the IT skills, training and development standard widely used in the UK and beyond. Developed and maintained for over 20 years by BCS in consultation with IT practitioners and employers, SFIAplus defines skills for the IT professional plus the training and development required to nurture and maintain them. SFIAplus version 3 is the cornerstone of the BCS' professional development products and services. It has already been adopted by employers ranging from insurance company Norwich Union to Deloitte, the Met. Office and ITV plc.
